Spain Digital Nomad Visa
The Spain Digital Nomad Visa is a special residence permit that allows remote workers and freelancers who work for non-Spanish companies or clients to legally live in Spain while continuing their professional activities remotely.
Introduced under Spain’s Startup Law (Ley de Startups) in 2023, this visa is considered one of the most attractive residence options in Europe for remote professionals.
Who Can Apply?
There are two main applicant categories:
Remote Employees
Individuals employed by a company located outside Spain who perform their work entirely remotely.
Freelancers / Self-Employed Professionals
Independent professionals or business owners who provide services to foreign clients and generate most of their income from outside Spain.
Important: Income obtained from Spanish-based companies must not exceed 20% of total earnings.
What Are the Main Requirements?
Applicants must meet the following conditions:
• Valid passport
• University degree or at least 3 years of relevant professional experience
• Clean criminal record covering the last 5 years
• Full-coverage private health insurance valid in Spain
• Proof of meeting the minimum income requirement
• Employment or service contracts proving remote work status
The minimum income threshold is updated annually and is approximately €2,700–€2,800 per month for a single applicant.
Duration of Residence and Renewal
The duration of the permit depends on where the application is submitted:
• Applications through a Spanish consulate typically grant a 1-year visa.
• Applications submitted from within Spain may grant residence for up to 3 years.
The permit is renewable as long as eligibility requirements continue to be met.
After 5 years of continuous and legal residence, applicants may apply for permanent residence. After 10 years of legal residence, Spanish citizenship may become available (standard rule).
